How Custom Stainless Steel Countertops Are Made: From Order to Install.
A flat sheet of SUS 304 becomes a countertop cut to your exact kitchen. Here's what actually happens in the weeks in between.
Most countertop materials arrive at a fabricator as a slab and get cut down to fit a kitchen. A custom stainless steel countertop works the opposite way: nothing exists until your measurements do. There's no warehouse of pre-cut pieces waiting to be trimmed — the process starts from raw sheet stock, every time.
Here's what actually happens between submitting your dimensions and a crate showing up at your door.
It starts as a flat sheet
Every order begins as a flat sheet of SUS 304 stainless steel in the thickness you specified — 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, or 10mm. Using your submitted dimensions, the sheet is cut to your exact profile with precision cutting equipment, with cutout allowances built in wherever you've specified a sink, faucet, or appliance opening.
This is the step where the counter stops being generic material and starts being your counter — cut once, to your kitchen's actual dimensions, not a standard size you have to work around.
Finishing the edges and corners
A freshly cut sheet has a sharp, raw edge and square corners — not something you want on a surface people lean against and work at every day. Every edge is ground smooth and eased over by hand so there's no sharp line left anywhere on the piece.
Corners get the same attention, rounded to a specific radius rather than left as a sharp 90°. Our standard is a 1/4" radius — sometimes called a "dime radius," since it's roughly the curve you'd get pressing a dime into the corner. It's enough to soften the corner without losing the clean, rectangular look of the counter. If you have a different radius in mind — tighter for a more architectural edge, or larger for a softer one — just note it when you submit your measurements and we'll fabricate to that spec instead of the standard.
This hand-finishing is one of the real differences between full-thickness fabrication and the thin stainless veneers sometimes sold as a budget alternative: a veneer has no material to grind and shape on its own, so its edge is really just a wrap around an MDF or plywood substrate. A solid edge is steel all the way through — no wood core underneath to swell, delaminate, or rot if water ever gets under it.
Welding the sink and backsplash
An integrated sink or a welded backsplash is where TIG welding comes in specifically. Rather than caulking or clipping a sink bowl into a cutout, it's welded directly to the countertop, fusing the two pieces of steel into one continuous piece of metal — which is what makes it genuinely seamless rather than just tightly fitted.
After welding, the weld bead is ground down flush by hand until it's level with the surrounding surface. This is the step that takes the most skill and the most time — a rushed grind leaves a visible ridge or a thin spot, and a good one leaves you with a single, hygienic surface with no joint line around the sink for moisture, crumbs, or bacteria to collect in. No caulk line to discolor or fail in five years, either.
Sandblasting the finish
Once cutting, edge finishing, and any welding is complete, the entire surface — including every ground weld zone — gets sandblasted as a single pass. Fine abrasive media is blasted across the whole piece under pressure, creating the randomized, non-directional matte texture that's Lastra's standard finish.
Doing this as one final pass across the whole surface, after any welding, is what makes a welded seam disappear visually as well as physically. The blasted texture doesn't care where a weld was — it looks identical across the entire piece, with no patch, no mismatch, and no way to tell where a joint used to be.
Quality check and crating
Before anything ships, the finished piece is checked against your original quote: every dimension, every cutout position, every finish detail. Corners and edges are inspected by hand for any rough spots left from grinding.
Because stainless steel this thick is heavy and not something a parcel courier can handle safely, every surface is built its own wooden freight crate, sized specifically for that piece and padded at every contact point. It travels by freight carrier, not a delivery van, and arrives with a tracking number and a curbside delivery window.
Roughly six to eight weeks, start to finish.
